70% of the world's bicycle frames are made in China — but the components that matter come from Japan
The bicycle is the most democratic vehicle in existence — in the literal transport sense. But its manufacturing chain is one of the most globalised and concentrated in countries with low EIU scores.
The global bicycle market has a dual structure:
— Frames: 70% manufactured in China (2.12) and Taiwan (8.99). Taiwan clears the threshold; China does not.
— Mechanical components (groupsets, brakes, derailleurs): dominated by Shimano (Japan, 8.40) and SRAM (US, 7.85) — both democratic countries.
— Wheels and tyres: manufacturing distributed between Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China.
— Renowned European brands (Batavus, Gazelle, Pinarello, Colnago): European design, increasingly outsourced manufacturing.

The problem: Chinese concentration in frames and low-cost components
China (2.12) dominates the manufacture of low- and mid-cost bicycles. The main problem: labour conditions in Chinese bicycle factories are unaudited, and the steel chain for frames originates in Chinese steelmaking.
Taiwan (8.99) is the positive exception in Asia: Giant and Merida (the world's two largest bicycle brands) are Taiwanese companies with manufacturing in Taiwan and China. The distinction matters: bicycles manufactured at Giant's plant in Taichung (Taiwan) have Taiwanese and European supply chains; those manufactured in China do not.
The low-cost components problem: entry-level transmissions (derailleurs, cassettes, chains) from Microshift, Liqiong, or SRAM Entry are manufactured in China or with Chinese components. Shimano maintains its primary manufacturing in Japan and Malaysia (EIU 7.73 — clears the threshold).
Hydraulic and mechanical brakes from European brands (Magura — Germany 8.58, Hope Technology — UK 8.28) have a completely democratic and high-quality supply chain.
The democratic countries leading bicycle components
Japan (8.40) — Shimano, founded in 1921 in Sakai (Osaka), is the world's most important bicycle component company. It manufactures its mechanical and electronic groupsets (Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105, Deore, XT) in Japan and Malaysia. Its engineering standards are the absolute reference. Shimano's supply chain is fully auditable.
US (7.85) — SRAM, founded in Chicago in 1987, manufactures its high-end components (Red, Force, Rival, Eagle) with US design and R&D, and manufacturing in Taiwan (8.99) and Portugal (7.90). Chris King Precision Components (Portland, Oregon) manufactures hubs, headsets, and precision parts 100% American.
Germany (8.58) — Magura, founded in 1893 in Bad Urach, manufactures the world's best mountain bike hydraulic brakes in Germany. Rohloff, also German, produces the most reliable single-speed transmission on the market (Speedhub 500/14) in Kassel.
Italy (7.67) — Campagnolo, founded in 1933 in Vicenza, is the road bike component brand with the greatest historical tradition. Manufactures in Vicenza, Italy. Super Record and Record groupsets are 100% Italian-manufactured.
Netherlands (9.01) — Gazelle and Batavus are Europe's most important city bicycle brands. Batavus manufactures in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Gazelle in Dieren. Both use Japanese Shimano components and frames made with European steel or declared-origin aluminium.
What to look for when buying a bicycle with democratic origin
— Frame country of manufacture: Taiwan (8.99), Netherlands (9.01), Germany (8.58), Italy (7.67), US (7.85) — all clear the threshold.
— Groupset: Shimano (Japan/Malaysia), SRAM (US/Taiwan), Campagnolo (Italy) — all democratic.

The only critical component is low-cost frames manufactured in China. The solution: choose Taiwanese, Dutch, German, or Italian frames. The price difference exists, but so does the difference in quality and durability.
