The Problem We Were Actually Solving
I had spent years developing a digital product that I was convinced had global appeal, but every time I tried to sell it through a major platform store, I ran into payment restrictions or outright blocks. The platforms claimed it was due to their terms of service, but I suspected it was just a matter of not wanting to deal with the complexities of international sales. I needed a way to sell my product to anyone, anywhere in the world, without having to navigate a maze of gatekeepers and payment processors. After weeks of research, I decided to ditch the platform stores and sell digital downloads directly from my own website.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
Initially, I tried using a popular e-commerce platform to sell my digital product, thinking that it would handle all the complexities of international sales for me. But what I quickly discovered was that the platform's terms of service were so restrictive that I couldn't even sell my product to customers in certain countries. And even when I could, the platform took a huge cut of the revenue, leaving me with barely enough to cover my costs. I also tried using a payment gateway that claimed to support international transactions, but it kept flagging my sales as suspicious and freezing my account. I was at my wit's end, with a great product and no way to sell it to the people who wanted it.
The Architecture Decision
That's when I decided to take matters into my own hands and build my own digital download store from scratch. I chose to use a combination of WordPress and the Easy Digital Downloads plugin to create a custom storefront that could handle international sales and payments. I also integrated a payment processor called Stripe, which had a reputation for being more flexible and accommodating of international transactions. It wasn't an easy decision - building a custom storefront from scratch would require a significant investment of time and resources. But I was convinced that it was the only way to achieve my goal of selling my product to anyone, anywhere in the world.
What The Numbers Said After
The results were nothing short of astonishing. Within the first month of launching my custom storefront, I saw a 500% increase in sales, with customers from over 50 countries around the world. The Stripe payment processor proved to be a game-changer, with a payment success rate of over 95% and minimal issues with chargebacks or disputes. And because I was no longer beholden to a platform store's terms of service, I was able to keep 100% of my revenue, minus only the payment processing fees. My product was finally reaching the global audience I knew it deserved, and my business was thriving as a result.
What I Would Do Differently
Looking back, I wish I had ditched the platform stores and built my own custom storefront from the beginning. It would have saved me months of frustration and lost sales. I also wish I had chosen a more robust e-commerce platform, such as Shopify or Magento, which would have given me more flexibility and scalability. But overall, I am thrilled with the decision I made, and I would recommend it to any digital product creator who wants to sell their wares to a global audience without the hassle and expense of platform stores. One thing I would definitely do differently is to invest more in marketing and promotion, as getting the word out about my product was a much bigger challenge than I anticipated. But with the right tools and a bit of perseverance, I was able to overcome those challenges and build a thriving digital product business.
