The Problem We Were Actually Solving
As a freelance software engineer based in Nigeria, I have always struggled with receiving payments from international clients. The payment platforms that are widely used in the Western world, such as PayPal, are not available or are severely limited in my country. This has forced me to rely on alternative methods, which are often cumbersome and expensive. I have lost count of the number of times I have had to ask clients to use unconventional methods, such as wire transfers or prepaid debit cards, just to receive my hard-earned money. After one particularly frustrating experience with a client who could not send me payment via PayPal, I decided to explore other options. I started by researching the various payment platforms that are available to freelancers in Nigeria, including crypto-based solutions.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
My first attempt was to use PayPal, which I had used successfully in the past when working with clients in the United States. However, when I tried to receive payment from a client in the UK, I was hit with a slew of restrictions and fees. The client was unable to send me payment directly, and we had to use a third-party service that charged a hefty fee. The payment was delayed by several days, and I was left with a significant portion of my earnings deducted as fees. I also tried using other traditional payment platforms, such as Payoneer and TransferWise, but they all had similar issues. Either they were not available in Nigeria, or they charged exorbitant fees that made it impossible for me to earn a decent income. I was desperate for a solution that would allow me to receive payments quickly, securely, and with minimal fees. I began to explore crypto-based solutions, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, which seemed to offer a more promising alternative.
The Architecture Decision
After conducting extensive research and weighing the pros and cons of each option, I decided to use crypto-based payments for my freelance work. I chose to use Coinbase as my primary platform, due to its ease of use, security, and relatively low fees. I also set up a wallet on MetaMask, which allowed me to receive and store Ethereum-based tokens. I was aware of the volatility of crypto markets, but I believed that the benefits of using crypto outweighed the risks. I was willing to take on the risk of price fluctuations in order to have access to a more reliable and efficient payment system. I updated my website and social media profiles to reflect my new payment options, and I began to inform my clients about the change. I used tools like Zapier to automate the payment process, and I set up a system to track and manage my crypto-based payments.
What The Numbers Said After
The results were astonishing. Within the first month of using crypto-based payments, I saw a significant increase in my earnings. I was able to receive payments from clients in a matter of minutes, rather than days or weeks. The fees were substantially lower, and I was able to keep a much larger portion of my earnings. I used a tool called Google Data Studio to track my earnings and fees, and I was amazed at the difference. My average transaction fee was reduced by over 70%, and my payment processing time was reduced by over 90%. I was also able to expand my client base, as I was no longer limited by the restrictions of traditional payment platforms. I used a tool called HubSpot to track my client engagement and sales, and I saw a significant increase in my website traffic and leads. I was able to grow my business in ways that I never thought possible, and I was finally able to earn a decent income as a freelance software engineer in Nigeria.
What I Would Do Differently
In hindsight, I wish I had made the switch to crypto-based payments earlier. I spent too much time trying to make traditional payment platforms work, and I lost out on significant earnings as a result. I also wish I had been more proactive in educating my clients about the benefits of crypto-based payments. Some of my clients were hesitant to use crypto, and it took time and effort to convince them of the benefits. I used a tool called Mailchimp to send out newsletters and updates to my clients, and I was able to slowly but surely convince them to make the switch. I would also recommend that other freelancers in similar situations consider using crypto-based payments. It may seem daunting at first, but the benefits far outweigh the risks. I would advise them to do their research, choose a reputable platform, and be patient with the learning curve. With the right tools and knowledge, crypto-based payments can be a game-changer for freelancers in developing countries. I plan to continue using crypto-based payments for my freelance work, and I am excited to see the continued growth and adoption of crypto-based solutions in the years to come.
