This is the comparison most people should start with. Not H100 vs everything. RTX 4090 vs A100.

The short answer

  • Pick RTX 4090 for experiments, smaller fine-tunes, image generation, and cost-conscious work
  • Pick A100 80GB when VRAM is the real bottleneck, not just speed

When the RTX 4090 wins

Use the 4090 for:

  • smaller LLM fine-tunes
  • Stable Diffusion and FLUX workflows
  • prototype inference and notebooks
  • anything where price matters more than massive VRAM headroom

When the A100 wins

Use the A100 when:

  • the workload does not fit comfortably in 24GB VRAM
  • heavier fine-tuning needs more memory headroom
  • avoiding multi-GPU complexity matters
  • throughput plus 80GB VRAM changes the workflow in a real way

What most people get wrong

They compare prestige, not workload fit.

The 4090 looks "consumer."
The A100 looks "serious."

But what actually matters is simple: does the model fit, and does the higher rate save enough time to justify itself?

The practical rule

If you are unsure, start with the 4090.
If VRAM becomes the real problem, move to the A100.

Most teams should not start the comparison at H100.
