On what parameters dev.to features stories in its feed?

  • Number of Interactions (hearts and unicorns),
  • number of comments,
  • age of the article (less than 18 hours)
  • tags that are relevant if a user is logged in / has followed some tags.

You can find the Forem GitHub repository and search for “black box” to get a better idea of what they look at.

There are no “featured stories” in the feed (although they are experimenting with that), it is all decided by algorithm (except for poor quality posts where moderators can mark an item to appear less often, but I don’t know how often that happens).
