I think tech job market is not as grim now, as it was not as good before. I think that nowadays a lot of people creates an opinion based on what they see on social media and not on real big picture.
Work on tech industry never was easy.
These days, there's a heavy talk on the "AI". I am not sure how many companies have officially moved their systems to PROD, However, there's a major concern regarding the job cut down as the AI can eliminate some of the low level jobs.
Yeah, I pity anyone who actually dumps junior devs in favor of AI. Research indicates that GitHub Copilot actually negatively impacts code quality.
GitHub Copilot may be a new kid. While the AI is advancing, we need to accept that some of the jobs are already gone. Welcome to the new AI jobs, :) Those who work and continuously learn and upgrade will survive!
I feel it will be hard to train seniors without juniors
Relatively speaking, the tech job market is bad. But I wouldn't say "grim". It just doesn't have the extreme job surplus that used to exist.
We are definitely in a messy phase with a few macro trends leading to a bad job market, but these things are cyclical and I think it will get better.
Thriving in tomorrow's job market will require skills working with AI in general, so all else equal I'd make sure I'm tracking new things to complement my existing skills.
Summary: it's 100% RIP
Honestly, I feel like the way things are currently going, it's becoming just as much "who you know" as it is "what you know", which is similar to how things played out after the first dot-com bubble burst in 2001. Two of my last three gigs were found via straight-up networking and the third I was cold-poached by Oracle away from one of those gigs.
From an economic perspective, the market is merely adjusting.
Developing software is expensive and risky. There was a huge influx in investments following the financial crisis in 2008. It helped risk-taking enterprises that would swallow huge amounts of cash take off the ground by employing an army of engineers.
As you might guess, these times are over. Increasing central interest rates had to catch up with a hot-running world economy after COVID, causing a meltdown in human capital around the globe. Lots of scrum masters wrote their final sprint artifact, and lots of devs wrote a final loc. Now there's AI, which currently (IMHO) disrupts people's minds stronger than the actual job market.
What will happen next? The market will (probably) get better again soon. And later, (probably) worse again. Economic cycles historically occurred within 2-5 years, so my guess is
I wont say it is 'grim', but even if that is true, there is always possibilities creating new jobs in the market. Even if AI takes over some positions, it would result in the birth of new opportunities and positions.
so normal how to start working
