I think tech job market is not as grim now, as it was not as good before. I think that nowadays a lot of people creates an opinion based on what they see on social media and not on real big picture.
Work on tech industry never was easy.

These days, there's a heavy talk on the "AI". I am not sure how many companies have officially moved their systems to PROD, However, there's a major concern regarding the job cut down as the AI can eliminate some of the low level jobs.

Yeah, I pity anyone who actually dumps junior devs in favor of AI. Research indicates that GitHub Copilot actually negatively impacts code quality.

GitHub Copilot may be a new kid. While the AI is advancing, we need to accept that some of the jobs are already gone. Welcome to the new AI jobs, :) Those who work and continuously learn and upgrade will survive!

Relatively speaking, the tech job market is bad. But I wouldn't say "grim". It just doesn't have the extreme job surplus that used to exist.

We are definitely in a messy phase with a few macro trends leading to a bad job market, but these things are cyclical and I think it will get better.

Thriving in tomorrow's job market will require skills working with AI in general, so all else equal I'd make sure I'm tracking new things to complement my existing skills.

  • They're only hiring senior devs
  • Junior positions = non-existent
  • Travel across the world to join their team in south Narnia
  • Old days: you know how to progam? hired
  • Nowadays: Kubernetes, DevOps, Spring Doot, 10 years of Swift
  • Write an essay about your achievements in high school to apply
  • After massive layoffs all those fired people are now searching for a job

Summary: it's 100% RIP

Honestly, I feel like the way things are currently going, it's becoming just as much "who you know" as it is "what you know", which is similar to how things played out after the first dot-com bubble burst in 2001. Two of my last three gigs were found via straight-up networking and the third I was cold-poached by Oracle away from one of those gigs.
