SaaS tools are expensive. Many of them do one specific thing that a well-crafted AI prompt can do almost as well — for free.
I tested these 5 prompts against the paid tools they replace. Here's what I found.
1. Replaces: Cold Email Tools ($50-100/mo)
Tools like Lemlist, Instantly, and Apollo charge monthly fees for cold email generation and personalization.
Write a cold email to [NAME] at [COMPANY].
Context: I built [PRODUCT], which [ONE SENTENCE].
Why them: They [SPECIFIC RELEVANT DETAIL].
Constraints:
- Under 100 words
- First line references their real work
- Ask: "Would you try it and tell me what's broken?"
- No "reaching out" or "hope this finds you well"
Result: 12% reply rate vs 8% from the paid tool. The prompt produced more personalized, shorter emails.
2. Replaces: SEO Content Tools ($100-200/mo)
Tools like Clearscope, SurferSEO, and MarketMuse analyze search intent and suggest content structure.
Analyze the top-ranking pages for [KEYWORD].
Based on this search intent, create an outline:
- H1 (includes keyword naturally)
- 5-7 H2 sections covering different aspects of the topic
- For each section: 3 key points to cover
- Identify 3 questions people also ask about this topic
- Suggest internal linking opportunities
Output as a structured outline.
Result: Not as data-rich as paid tools, but the outline quality was 80% as good for zero cost. Best for solo founders and small teams.
3. Replaces: Competitor Analysis Tools ($50-150/mo)
Tools like Crayon, Klue, and Kompyte track competitors.
Analyze these competitors for [OUR PRODUCT]:
1. [COMPETITOR 1] - [URL]
2. [COMPETITOR 2] - [URL]
3. [COMPETITOR 3] - [URL]
For each:
- Core features
- Pricing model
- Target audience
- Key differentiator
- Weakness we can exploit
- What they do better than us
Output as a comparison table.
Result: Requires manual research input but the analysis structure was excellent. Good for quarterly competitor reviews.
4. Replaces: Landing Page Copy Tools ($50-100/mo)
Tools like Copy.ai, Jasper, and Writesonic generate marketing copy.
Write a landing page for [PRODUCT].
- Hero headline: 10 words max, leads with the outcome
- Subheadline: 20 words, explains what it does
- 3 feature blocks: title + one sentence, focused on outcomes
- Social proof placeholder
- CTA: specific action, not "Learn More"
- FAQ: 4 questions addressing common objections
Result: Produced usable copy in 30 seconds vs 20 minutes with a paid tool. Needed one round of editing either way.
5. Replaces: Customer Research Tools ($100-300/mo)
Tools like User Interviews, Maze, and Dovetail for synthesizing customer feedback.
Synthesize this customer feedback:
[PASTE FEEDBACK]
Output:
- Top 5 themes (by frequency)
- For each: how many mentioned it, example quotes
- Categorize: bugs vs features vs UX issues vs pricing
- Priority recommendation (impact vs effort)
- 3 surprising insights
Result: Comparable to paid tools for qualitative analysis. Missing quantitative features but excellent for small datasets.
The takeaway
AI prompts won't replace every SaaS tool. But for solo founders, small teams, and anyone watching their budget, these 5 prompts can save $400-850/month in subscriptions.
