I Ran the Numbers: When to Take Vacation in 2026 (By Country)

Your coworker in Paris gets 11 public holidays and 30 days of PTO. You get 11 holidays and maybe 15 days off. But here's the real kicker — they're not just getting more time off. They're getting smarter time off.

I built a free PTO optimizer that finds the best days to take vacation. When I added support for multiple countries, the results were jaw-dropping. A worker in France using the same number of PTO days as an American can get nearly double the consecutive time off — just because of how their holidays fall.

Let me show you the math, country by country.

The Setup: What Everyone Actually Gets

Before we talk strategy, let's look at the raw numbers for 2026:

Country Public Holidays Typical PTO Working Days
USA 11 15 239
UK 8 28 229
France 11 30 224
Germany 9-13* 30 226

*Germany varies by state; Bavaria has up to 13 public holidays.

The USA already looks rough. But the placement of these holidays is what really matters.

USA: The Short-Week Machine

America's 11 federal holidays are a mixed bag for optimization. Here's the 2026 calendar:

The wins:

  • Memorial Day (May 25, Monday) — Take off May 22 (Friday) = 4-day weekend
  • Independence Day (July 4, Saturday) — Observed Friday July 3 = 3-day weekend
  • Labor Day (Sept 7, Monday) — Take off Sept 4 (Friday) = 4-day weekend
  • Thanksgiving (Nov 26, Thursday) — Take Nov 25 (Wed) AND Nov 27 (Fri) = 5-day break
  • Christmas (Dec 25, Friday) — Take Dec 21-24 (Mon-Thu) = 10 consecutive days off using 4 PTO days

The duds:

  • Veterans Day (Nov 11, Wednesday) — Isolated Wednesday. Terrible.
  • Columbus Day (Oct 12, Monday) — Decent 3-day weekend, but not worth extending.

Best US strategy: 15 PTO days across three blocks (July, Thanksgiving, Christmas) = 28+ consecutive days off across the year.

UK: The Easter Machine

The UK only has 8 bank holidays in England and Wales. Sounds bad. But UK workers typically get 28 days of PTO (including bank holidays), leaving 20 discretionary days.

2026 UK Bank Holidays:

  • Jan 1 (Thu) — New Year's. Take Jan 2 (Fri) = 4-day weekend.
  • Apr 3 (Fri) — Good Friday. Already a 3-day weekend.
  • Apr 6 (Mon) — Easter Monday. Take Apr 7-9 (Tue-Thu) = 9 consecutive days off using 3 PTO days.
  • May 4 (Mon) — Early May Bank Holiday. Take May 5 (Tue) = 4-day weekend.
  • May 25 (Mon) — Spring Bank Holiday. Take May 22 (Fri) = 4-day weekend.
  • Aug 31 (Mon) — Summer Bank Holiday. Take Sep 1 (Tue) = 4-day weekend.
  • Dec 25 (Fri) + Dec 28 (Mon) — Christmas. Take Dec 21-24 (Mon-Thu) = 10 consecutive days off using 4 PTO days.

The Easter block (3 PTO days to 9 consecutive days off) has an ROI of 3.0 — every PTO day yields 3 days of vacation.

France: The Pont Paradise

France is where it gets absurd. French workers get 11 public holidays and 25-30 days of PTO. There's a cultural practice called "faire le pont" (making the bridge) — taking the day between a Thursday/Friday holiday and the weekend to create a longer break.

2026 French Holidays:

  • Jan 1 (Thu) — Take Jan 2 (Fri) = 4-day weekend.
  • Apr 6 (Mon) — Easter Monday. Extended weekend.
  • May 1 (Fri) — Labour Day. 3-day weekend.
  • May 8 (Fri) — Victory 1945. 3-day weekend.
  • May 14 (Thu) — Ascension. Take May 15 (Fri) = 4-day weekend.
  • May 25 (Mon) — Whit Monday. Extended weekend.
  • Jul 14 (Tue) — Bastille Day. Take Jul 13 (Mon) = 4-day weekend.
  • Aug 15 (Sat) — Assomption. Falls on Saturday.
  • Nov 1 (Sun) — Toussaint. Falls on Sunday.
  • Nov 11 (Wed) — Armistice. Isolated Wednesday.
  • Dec 25 (Fri) — Christmas. 3-day weekend.

May is where France crushes it. There are 5 public holidays in May 2026. A French worker can take just 4 PTO days in May and get 19 consecutive days off (May 9-26).

Germany: The Efficient Vacation Machine

Germany gives 9 national holidays (up to 13 in Catholic states like Bavaria) and a legally mandated minimum of 20 PTO days (most workers get 25-30).

2026 German Holidays:

  • Jan 1 (Thu) — Take Jan 2 (Fri) = 4-day weekend.
  • Apr 3 (Fri) — Good Friday. 3-day Easter weekend.
  • Apr 6 (Mon) — Easter Monday. Extended Easter.
  • May 1 (Fri) — Labour Day. 3-day weekend.
  • May 14 (Thu) — Ascension. Take May 15 (Fri) = 4-day weekend.
  • May 25 (Mon) — Whit Monday. 3-day weekend.
  • Oct 3 (Sat) — German Unity Day. Falls on Saturday.
  • Dec 25 (Fri) — Christmas Day. 3-day weekend.
  • Dec 26 (Sat) — 2nd Christmas Day. Falls on Saturday.

Germany's 2026 isn't as favorable as France's — two holidays fall on weekends. But May is still excellent with 3 holidays in a 3-week span.

The Country Showdown: Same PTO Budget, Different Results

Here's what happens when every worker uses exactly 10 PTO days in 2026:

Country Strategy Consecutive Days Off ROI
USA July + Christmas blocks 26 days 2.6x
UK Easter + Christmas blocks 19 days 1.9x
France May bridge + Christmas 29 days 2.9x
Germany May bridge + Christmas 27 days 2.7x

France wins. Not because French workers are smarter — because their holidays cluster in May, creating enormous bridge-day cascades.

The Bridge Day Principle

The key insight: a PTO day next to a holiday is worth 2-5x a random PTO day.

  • Random PTO day = 1 day off (back to work tomorrow)
  • Bridge PTO day = 3-4 consecutive days off
  • Cascading bridge PTO day = 5-9+ consecutive days off

This is why geography matters more than seniority for vacation quality.

What This Means For You

  1. Don't just count holidays — map them. A country with 8 well-placed holidays beats one with 13 scattered holidays.
  2. May is magic in Europe. If you're planning an international trip, May is when France and Germany workers disappear en masse. Book early.
  3. The US Thanksgiving-Christmas corridor is your best friend. Late November to early January is where you get the most consecutive days from the fewest PTO days.
  4. Always check if holidays fall on weekends. In 2026, the US is lucky. Germany gets unlucky (two holidays on weekends).
  5. Use a tool to find your optimal days. I built Holiday Optimizer to do this automatically — pick your country, enter your PTO days, get exact dates.
