I'm a developer. For most of last year I told myself I was tired, not burned out, because the calendar said "present" and the PRs shipped.
Then I ran the math.
The number came out to $11,427. Not a hospital bill. Not a missed promotion. A quiet, distributed leak: a $40 dinner I didn't taste, a slow Tuesday afternoon nobody flagged but I knew I'd lost, a "treat" at 2pm because I needed to feel something. A year of those, and that's a used car I could have owned.
I had no idea.
The thing nobody tells developers about burnout
Burnout doesn't shrink your salary directly. It shrinks the version of you that earns it.
For developers specifically, that means three measurable things:
Effective output = hours worked × focus quality
Decision quality = energy available × cost_benefit_clarity
Spending pattern = baseline spend + stress_dopamine_purchases
When burnout sets in, focus quality drops 30–50% but the hours worked term stays the same. Nobody flags it because the standup says "I shipped X." This is presenteeism. Gallup tracks the global cost of disengagement at $8.9 trillion in 2024, approaching $10 trillion in 2025.
The decision-quality drop is what costs developers most. You don't apply for the role that pays $14K more. You don't push back on the architecture decision that's costing the team 3 days/sprint. You don't ask for the rate increase. Burnout has narrowed your bandwidth to "least resistance only."
The actual per-employee numbers
American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Feb 2025. Researchers at CUNY SPH, Johns Hopkins, Baruch College, and University of San Diego published a per-role breakdown of what burnout costs employers per year:

89.5% of it is presenteeism. Showing up but not producing.
You absorb three things the employer doesn't:
The salary you didn't ask for. A burned-out version of you doesn't negotiate. A conservative $4,000/yr negotiation gap, repeated over a 25-year career, is a six-figure shortfall before market raises.
The anxiety spend. ~$282/month / $3,381/year on impulse purchases for the U.S. average (Capital One Shopping 2024), higher for the high-stress subset.
The recovery delay. Mild burnout resolves in 2–8 weeks with structured intervention. Left alone, it slides into moderate territory: 6–12 months of half-speed living (Dr. Gail Gazelle, Feb 2026).

Why I built this
Because the people best positioned to surface burnout's financial cost (your manager, your HR team, your therapist if you have one) are paid to address it in their lane: productivity, retention, mental health. Nobody owns the line item that crosses all three: your wallet.
Your therapist won't say "you're losing $11,000 a year to this." Your manager won't either. Your bank app won't categorize an impulse buy as "burnout spend." So the number stays invisible, and invisible numbers don't drive change.
The fix is to make the number visible. Specifically. To the dollar.
