# Preface:

This is the 14th book I finished reading in 2023. Regarding Sir Ken Robinson, you may have seen his TED talk (reportedly the most-watched video on TED). It's about "Do schools kill creativity?". Ken Robinson is a great educator dedicated to education, and he shares his views on education through many lectures and books. This book is his last creation (due to health reasons, his daughter assisted in completing it later).

▎Education, Needs to Be Reimagined

The current education system is like an "industrialized farm," overemphasizing obedience, testing, and getting into prestigious schools,
more than health, happiness, creativity, and learning, ignoring children's anxiety, pressure, and confusion.

Just as we are destroying the diversity of natural resources, the current education system is also destroying the diversity of human talents.

Education is a living system, nurturing minds and spirits for living beings.
Education must enable students to understand the world around them and their own unique talents,
in order to enhance children's achievements and enable them to shine in the world they are about to inherit.

Parents and teachers are the most important advocates for children; adults' trust in children must be higher than their trust in the education system.
When the soil is right, the farming system will develop smoothly; when education is right, children will grow smoothly.

An education system can succeed, not because of exams, but because individuals are affirmed and the diversity of talents is valued.

Create creative connections in schools, learn across ages, across curricula, and in a multidisciplinary way, taking into account individual interests,
and each person's chosen unique path, no longer teaching generations of identical children, allowing growth, development, and learning to occur naturally.

This is "wild education" that is as full of vitality as a field,
allowing children to learn and grow in healthy soil, no longer emphasizing standardization, but developing diversity.

The goal of education is to cultivate eight core competencies: curiosity, creativity, judgment, communication, cooperation, compassion, inner peace, and citizenship.
Enabling students to have the ability to face the personal, cultural, economic, and social challenges that they will inevitably encounter throughout their lives after leaving school.

▎Schools, Need to Be Reimagined

Schools should not kill creativity, but should become lively learning fields, helping students truly recognize their own unique talents and interests.

Schools should not divide subjects into "core subjects" (such as Chinese, mathematics, English, and science) and
"minor subjects" (such as art, music, and physical education). "IQ" is not the whole picture of "intelligence."
Human intelligence is diverse, encouraging children to develop multiple intelligences,
in order to unleash creativity. The highest form of intelligence is creative thinking.

Schools are like a healthy and thriving ecosystem;
valuing teachers, cross-disciplinary teaching, flexible timetables, and viewing assessment from the correct angle,
in order to achieve the goal of personalized learning.

Schools are part of a broader cultural ecosystem.
Excellent farmers cultivate the natural ecosystem of plants,
Similarly, excellent schools will strive to have closer connections with the larger community outside.

▎Future, Needs to Be Reimagined

Strong imagination enables humans to create far-reaching achievements,
changing the face of the earth, but at the same time, it has brought us to the brink.

The challenges of this era are both real and urgent, and humans are the source of the problem.
The climate change crisis and the earth's predicament are the result of our disregard for nature.
To meet the challenges of the survival of the earth and humanity, we must unleash creativity,
to make economic development diverse and sustainable, and to enable ecosystems to be balanced and thriving.

Since humans have created the world we currently live in, there must be a way to transform it.
For a long time, we have been using the same methods, constantly consuming human resources and the earth's natural resources;
we must immediately solve these two problems in order to look forward to the future.

## The Advantages of Humanity

Inherent human abilities:

- Imagination
- Creativity
  - Process
  - Originality
  - Value

Many related creativity, in the changes of many different media and things in today's society.

## You Are Richer Than You Think

Intelligence is diverse:

- Strong in some aspects, relatively weak in other aspects.
- Related intelligence is also related to the innate environment.

Intelligence is dynamic:

- According to different things, different environmental stimuli. There will be related intelligence performance.
- **Tying intelligence to learning subjects will ignore "creativity"**

The Myth of Creativity:

- It's not just art-related that is creativity, any subject and project is related to creativity.
- Creativity comes from the environment, and various genetics also affect the way creativity is presented.

Blind Spots in Education:

- Trying to organize the knowledge they need in an orderly manner, but forgetting what they love.
- How to cultivate the generation of related creativity.
- Education needs to understand every student:
  - The world around you that you understand
  - The inner world that exists because of you (creativity and intelligence

The main directions of education:

- Individual:
  - Understand and respect everyone, and make children happy to receive education.
- Culture:
  - Affirm your own culture, understand other cultures and practices.
- Economy
- Society

## Eight Important Abilities:

#### Curiosity: The ability to ask questions and explore how the world works.

#### Creativity: The ability to generate new ideas and put them into practice.

- Try to guide children to explore and generate interest.

#### Judgment: The ability to analyze information and ideas, and form reasonable arguments and judgments.

- Help children how to find the correct, and have critical thinking.

#### Communication: The ability to express ideas and feelings clearly and confidently in different ways.

#### Cooperation: The ability to work with others in a constructive way.

#### Compassion: The ability to empathize with others and take action as a result.

#### Inner Peace: The ability to connect with inner feelings and cultivate inner harmony and balance.

#### Citizenship: The ability to engage in positive action in society and participate in the process of social maintenance.

## Education from Factory to Farm: Wild Education

**Factory Education:**

- Mass production methods
- Linear production
- Everyone (teacher) has their own responsible items (subjects)
- Predefined, unchanging, strictly controlled

**Disadvantages of Factory Education:**

- Educating children as commodities (to university), but often before the "finished product," their lives have already started for the most part.
- Through standardized education, many children become more unhappy.

**Wild Education:**

- Good farmers do not limit the framework of growth
- Instead, they will prepare the best soil for plants to grow and thrive.
- Excellent schools will focus on creating the conditions for children to grow and thrive, and shine.

## Turning Schools into Ecosystems:

- Respect the diversity of the ecosystem (the diversity of children)

- Value teachers, just as children themselves are the main body of education. Teachers are also an indispensable part of education. Teachers are like good and experienced farmers, who need to be respected and given good treatment.

- Through personalized education:

# Thoughts:

If this is a book from "Ken Robinson," it's better to say that this is the summary of what he has been doing all his life. Just like his three TED talks that changed tens of millions of people. The whole book revolves around these three important concepts, and through these three main shares, it brings three concepts:

- Education itself needs to maintain personalization
- How to allow every child to receive the education that suits them best through wild education.
- How to make schools a good ecosystem, and respecting teachers is also an important part.

It really makes every parent think deeply about a book, and I am also very grateful to Ken Robinson for bringing the shock of education. I also hope that every child can receive a more suitable and thought-provoking education system.
