Preface

Hello everyone, I am Evan Lin from the LINE Taiwan DevRel team. I am very happy to share with you the first developer meetup of this year. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event has been changed to an online event and broadcasted to all participants through LINE OA Live. The full video will also be available on the official fan page and the official developer Youtube channel for developers who want to participate.

This LINE Developer Meetup developer meetup will feature three LINE engineers to share. First, Julian Shen will introduce the new service LINE SPOT launched last year, followed by Johnson Wu sharing some of the work content of the LINE data engineering team. Students often ask whether LINE has internship opportunities for science and engineering students, so Wei, who participated in the "LINE TECH FRESH Technical New Star Talent Program," will introduce how to join LINE TECH FRESH.

Opening / LINE Senior Developer Relations and Technology Promotion Engineer Evan Lin

First of all, in response to the impact of the pandemic this year, many offline events cannot be held. This year, the Developer Relations and Technology Promotion Department has prepared many online activities and online videos to communicate and share with developers. Here, I would also like to share with you that the official fan page of LINE Taiwan developers and the LINE Taiwan developer Youtube channel have both opened. Developers can browse all the online activities and related exchange videos that have been held on them.

Video (Please refer to the LINE Engineering Blog article)

The first to appear was Julian Shen from the LINE SPOT team. Julian had previously introduced the LINE SPOT service at TECHPULSE 2019. For more information on the LINE SPOT service and the LINE SPOT architecture, please refer to this article "LINE TAIWAN TECHPULSE 2019 Technology Conference Review".

In addition to the LINE SPOT service introduction, this time also shared how LINE SPOT quickly built the LINE SPOT mask map service in response to the changes in the pandemic.

As everyone knows, the content of the mask map service comes from the API provided by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for inquiries and visual display. For developers, there may be the following considerations.

  • Is this a function that you want to launch quickly?
  • Is a large amount of traffic expected to pour in?
  • Is the data source of Open Data likely to change? How can it be quickly adapted?
  • How to effectively handle the remaining amount of masks?

Welcome everyone to watch the relevant videos to learn more detailed content.

LINE Career: LINE Taiwan Server-side Engineer

The happiness of a junior data scientist is often so simple but not boring / LINE Data Dev - Johnson Wu

Video (Please refer to the LINE Engineering Blog article)

The second speaker, Johnson Wu, from the LINE Taiwan Data Engineering team, shared his experience since joining LINE last year. According to the speaker, like many people with a computer science background, he participated in some projects after graduating from a master's program and then joined LINE, but there are many interesting things to share with you this year:

Learning to handle massive data

The speaker summarized the relevant data he has processed, including information on more than 20M users (de-identified), more than 1M news articles from LINE TODAY in a year, and 1b messages from OA that were requested for inspection. These unimaginable amounts of data are what enable LINE to continuously improve the user experience and allow each user to effectively find the source of the information they need.

The speaker also shared that he has learned many related skills based on this information, whether it is accessing large amounts of data, tuning ML models, optimizing calculation time, and also strengthening his ability to communicate with people. Because in LINE, we spend a lot of time communicating and sharing with people from different regions and different business systems. We also need to train our technical communication skills with external developers.

Many people-related projects

This year, Johnson participated in the following projects:

  • LINE Message Verification (LINE Fact checker): Following the team to build an effective way to receive false information reports from users, and effectively train a false information identification model.
  • LINE Music: The automatic completion mechanism when users search, which can help users find the singers, songs or groups they want more accurately.
  • Some related research: Some papers and technology-related research.
  • Technology sharing: The speaker is also a speaker at LINE TECHPULSE 2019, sharing many interesting research findings.

With so many interesting shares, why not join the LINE Taiwan Data Engineering team?

Video (Please refer to the LINE Engineering Blog article)

The last to appear was Wei, a LINE Music engineer, who was previously an intern in the LINE TECH FRESH program. In this sharing, Wei shared his experience as a LINE TECH FRESH intern. Here are a few key points:

What is LINE TECH FRESH?

Every year, the LINE Taiwan engineering team recruits students and graduate students from information technology-related departments, or those who have some knowledge in this field, to join the LINE team for long-term internships (one year) through the LINE TECH FRESH – Technical New Star Talent Program, allowing students to observe and learn in an international technology company.

For more information, please refer to this article: LINE TECH FRESH – Technical New Star Talent Program, Internship Experience Revealed

How did you learn about the LINE TECH FRESH program?

LINE came to Taipei University of Technology to hold a sharing session, and learned about the TECH FRESH opportunity and wanted to learn some experience.

Can you ask about the LINE interview process?:

It is divided into two stages. First, applicants will be asked to submit the LINE Bot they wrote. Through the design concept of the entire LINE Bot and the processing methods of related code. The examiner will understand the applicant's ability and meticulousness based on these methods.

After passing the first stage, you may be invited to an interview and fill out a programming ability test paper (or whiteboard questions). During the interview with the supervisor, the supervisor will also patiently guide the relevant answers. There will be no pressure during the interview.

What is the actual working situation after officially becoming LINE TECH FRESH?:

On the first day of reporting, you will see comfortable chairs in the office (reportedly worth tens of thousands). And even LINE TECH FRESH interns (with salaries) also have complete computer equipment and related stationery equipment. After reporting, the supervisor will also have relevant new employee training at the beginning, and will also bring some projects to allow TECH FRESH colleagues to be familiar with the development process.

The development work in LINE has a considerable degree of freedom and values communication among colleagues. Many times, you can learn how to discuss with the project planning team and the project business department. And there are often cross-departmental discussions, even cross-national discussions (with teams in Korea, Japan or Thailand). These experiences are quite unforgettable during the internship.

LINE TECH FRESH benefits

LINE TECH FRESH interns are mostly like full-time engineers, enjoying the same benefits as all colleagues. There are free breakfasts to take, and the department also has regular gatherings and learning and discussion opportunities. And there are also a large number of learning resources to learn. There are many experienced seniors in the company who are willing and patient to share and guide.

What projects did you participate in during the LINE TECH FRESH internship?

  • Summer Collaboration: Collaborating with the LINE FRESH summer work-study program, and working with LINE FRESH short-term work-study students from other schools to complete a project.
  • Chatbot Development: Baby says, Refrigerator-kun and Little Cook.
  • Participated in the development of the LINE MRT Beacon project.

Finally, the speaker also mentioned that he is quite accustomed to the Engineering Culture here. He also likes the overall working environment and atmosphere. Therefore, after completing LINE TECH FRESH, he went through the formal process to apply for a full-time position (requiring a re-examination and interview) as a full-time LINE Music engineer.
