How are you handling quick Instagram profile lookups for OSINT work without getting constantly IP-blocked?

How are you handling quick Instagram profile lookups for OSINT work without getting constantly IP-blocked?
It’s Tuesday morning, I’ve got three cups of lukewarm coffee sitting on my desk, and I'm staring at another dead-end captcha loop because an automated script decided to implode right in the middle of checking a public profile. Classic routine.
If you do OSINT research or routine background checks on public social profiles, you already know the pain of trying to pull basic data from Instagram. Direct web scraping is basically a full-time babysitting job at this point. Residential proxies burn through budgets fast, session IDs get invalidated every ten minutes, and the moment you scale up your requests, you're hit with blocks or login walls.
For a long time, I tried running instagrapi and custom BeautifulSoup scripts, but maintenance took up more time than the actual analysis. Every couple of weeks, Instagram tweaks something minor in their internal endpoints, and your whole pipeline breaks. I didn't want to spend half my day managing proxy pools and debugging rate-limit errors just to fetch basic profile info, media chunks, or post history.
Then I ended up testing out a REST wrapper service to see if it would save my sanity. I went with hikerapi.com after burning through a few free trial requests. It handles the proxy rotation and session management on their end, meaning I just fire a standard HTTP request and get clean JSON back.
Here is basically what a quick profile check looks like now:
import requests
headers = {"x-access-key": "YOUR_KEY"}
r = requests.get("https://api.hikerapi.com/v2/user/by/username?username=natgeo", headers=headers)
print(r.json())

The Trade-offs: API vs. Traditional Scraping / instagrapi
Let's be honest about the pros and cons, because nothing is a silver bullet:

  • The old way (Scraping / instagrapi): It's free (aside from infrastructure and proxy costs), which is great if you love spending your weekends writing retry logic, managing fake accounts, and dealing with sudden blocks. instagrapi is great for self-hosted automation when you have full control over the accounts, but for fast, ad-hoc OSINT checks where reliability matters more than saving a fraction of a cent per request, it's exhausting to keep alive.
  • The API way: It's pay-per-request (starting around a fraction of a cent per call with prepaid balances), which means you're trading cash for time. You don't have to maintain a graveyard of burner accounts or fiddle with headers every time Instagram updates its web client. The downside? You're relying on a third-party service, and you're paying per call, so if you're trying to scrape millions of records on a zero budget, it won't make sense. But for targeted profile lookups and media metadata during active investigations, it cuts out the plumbing work. Curious how others here are tackling this. Are you still maintaining your own scraping infrastructure with proxy rotation, or have you shifted to paid REST wrappers for client work?
