OpenAI has lost another senior executive at a time when the company is making big moves to expand its AI infrastructure.
Chris Malone, who led OpenAI’s data center efforts, has left the company after about 18 months. His exit comes soon after OpenAI reshaped its infrastructure team, with Vice President Sachin Katti taking on a bigger leadership role.
Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025 after working in senior engineering roles at Google and Meta. His main focus was helping the company build the data center capacity needed to support its growing AI business.
That task has become increasingly important. Running and training advanced AI models requires huge amounts of computing power, along with GPUs, servers, storage, cooling systems, and electricity.
OpenAI is now expanding its infrastructure through data center leases, cloud partnerships, and major projects such as Stargate.
Reports also suggest that the company could spend hundreds of billions of dollars on computing infrastructure through 2030.
Malone’s departure is not the only leadership change at OpenAI. Other senior executives, including Brad Lightcap, Fidji Simo, and Denise Dresser, have also recently left or moved into new roles.
That does not automatically mean OpenAI is facing a crisis. The company is growing quickly, and its leadership structure is changing along with it. Still, having several senior departures close together is something worth watching.
OpenAI is also reportedly preparing for a possible public listing in 2027. If that happens, investors will likely pay close attention to how the company handles its leadership, spending, and long-term infrastructure plans.
For now, OpenAI has a huge task ahead: securing enough chips, data centers, electricity, and funding while continuing to build better AI models.
In the end, OpenAI’s next big challenge may be as much about infrastructure and execution as it is about AI itself.
