This post is my submission for DEV Education Track: Build Apps with Google AI Studio.
What I Built
As a Google Developer Expert (GDE) in AI & Cloud, one of the biggest bottlenecks I see when teaching developers and students about multimodal AI architectures is turning abstract technical concepts into engaging, visual stories.
For the Build Apps with Google AI Studio Education Track, I built Comic Studio AI (ComicCrafter AI) — a full-stack multimodal web application generated with Google AI Studio's Build Mode, powered by Google Gemini (for structured 4-panel storyboard scripting, dialogue generation, and character consistency) and the Google Imagen API (for rendering cohesive, high-contrast comic panels in under 60 seconds).
Key Capabilities of Comic Studio AI:
- 🎙️ Voice or Text Idea Input: Speak or type a 1-sentence story idea or technical concept (for example, "Explain how an AI Agent uses a RAG vector database and prompt guardrails").
-
🧠 Structured 4-Panel Storyboard Generation (Gemini): Gemini acts as the narrative director, decomposing the raw idea into a strict JSON schema containing 4 sequential comic panels (
panel_number,scene_description,character_pose,speech_bubble, andimagen_visual_prompt). - 🎨 Automated Multi-Panel Rendering (Imagen API): Each structured panel prompt is passed to the Imagen API with a shared visual style anchor so characters, lighting, and color palettes stay consistent across all 4 panels.
- 📄 Instant Export & Sharing: Users can regenerate individual panels, edit speech bubbles live, and export the finished 4-panel comic strip for technical blogs, classrooms, or documentation.
Prompt Used
Here is the core structured system prompt I used inside Google AI Studio ("Build apps with Gemini") to scaffold the React + TypeScript application and wire up both Gemini and the Imagen API:
Build a responsive React + TypeScript web application called Comic Studio AI that turns a user's voice or text prompt into a 4-panel visual comic strip in under 60 seconds using Google Gemini and the Imagen API.
Core Requirements:
- Story & Prompt Input Bar: Allow the user to enter a story topic or technical concept (via text input or browser Web Speech API voice capture) and choose a visual art style (
Editorial Tech Comic,Manga,Kawaii Pastel, orSuperhero Ink).- Gemini Storyboard Director (
responseSchema): Call the Gemini API with structured JSON output to generate an array of exactly 4 panels. Each panel object must include:
panelNumber(1 to 4)captionBanner(short narrative header)dialogue(character speech bubble text, max 18 words)imagenPrompt(detailed visual prompt for the Imagen API that preserves character appearance and style consistency across all 4 panels).- Imagen API Panel Renderer: For each of the 4 panels returned by Gemini, call the Imagen API to generate the panel illustration, displaying a skeleton loading animation per panel and allowing single-panel regeneration.
- Interactive 2x2 Comic Grid & Export: Render the 4 generated Imagen illustrations inside a crisp 2x2 comic book layout with bold ink borders, editable speech bubbles, and a "Download 4-Panel Comic" button.

🧩 Core Gemini + Imagen Integration Architecture
Inside the generated Google AI Studio project, separating narrative planning (Gemini) from visual synthesis (Imagen) using a strict TypeScript schema eliminated inconsistent character designs across panels:
import { GoogleGenAI, Type, Schema } from "@google/genai";
const ai = new GoogleGenAI({ apiKey: process.env.GEMINI_API_KEY });
const comicPanelSchema: Schema = {
type: Type.ARRAY,
description: "A 4-panel comic strip storyboard with consistent character prompts for Imagen.",
items: {
type: Type.OBJECT,
properties: {
panelNumber: { type: Type.INTEGER },
captionBanner: { type: Type.STRING },
dialogue: { type: Type.STRING },
imagenPrompt: {
type: Type.STRING,
description: "Detailed Imagen prompt including consistent character description, setting, lighting, and comic ink style."
}
},
required: ["panelNumber", "captionBanner", "dialogue", "imagenPrompt"]
}
};
export async function generateComicStrip(idea: string, artStyle: string) {
// Step 1: Gemini generates the 4-panel structured storyboard
const storyboardResponse = await ai.models.generateContent({
model: "gemini-2.5-flash",
contents: `Create a 4-panel comic strip explaining or illustrating: "${idea}". Visual style: ${artStyle}. Ensure the main character's visual traits are repeated verbatim in every panel's imagenPrompt.`,
config: {
responseMimeType: "application/json",
responseSchema: comicPanelSchema,
temperature: 0.4
}
});
const panels = JSON.parse(storyboardResponse.text || "[]");
// Step 2: Render each panel illustration with the Imagen API
const renderedPanels = await Promise.all(
panels.map(async (panel: any) => {
const imageResult = await ai.models.generateImages({
model: "imagen-3.0-generate-002",
prompt: `${panel.imagenPrompt}, ${artStyle} comic panel, bold ink outlines, vibrant colors`,
config: {
numberOfImages: 1,
aspectRatio: "4:3",
outputMimeType: "image/jpeg"
}
});
const base64Image = imageResult.generatedImages?.[0]?.image?.imageBytes;
return {
...panel,
imageUrl: base64Image ? `data:image/jpeg;base64,${base64Image}` : ""
};
})
);
return renderedPanels;
}
My Experience
Working through the Build Apps with Google AI Studio Education Track highlighted three key engineering lessons that I now share in my workshops:
- From Idea to Full-Stack Multimodal Prototype in Minutes: Google AI Studio's Build Mode handled all the React state management, responsive 2x2 comic grid layout, and API wiring from a single structured prompt—letting me focus immediately on prompt engineering and visual quality rather than boilerplate setup.
-
Structured Outputs (
responseSchema) Are Essential for Chaining Gemini → Imagen: When building apps that combine text reasoning with image generation, asking Gemini to return a strict JSON schema with a dedicatedimagenPromptfield (repeating character clothing, hair, and palette descriptors in every panel) solved the classic "character drift" problem across multi-panel comics. - Iterative Prompt Refinement in Live Preview: Being able to test voice-to-comic prompts directly inside Google AI Studio's live preview—and then export the clean TypeScript code straight to GitHub and Google Cloud Run—makes Google AI Studio one of the fastest ways to go from a zero-setup prompt to a deployed production app.
