Every time you need to compress a 10MB PDF for an email or re-encode a few images for a website, the typical workflow is painful:
- You upload your sensitive personal files or contracts to an unknown cloud server.
- You wait for processing.
- You get hit with a daily limit or paywall: "Upgrade to Pro for $15/month to download."
As a web developer, I realized most everyday document and image tasks don't actually require massive cloud GPU clusters. Modern browsers have immense compute power with the HTML5 Canvas API, WebAssembly, and modern JavaScript engines.
So I built GenZDoc — a lightweight suite of document and image utilities designed to process tasks directly on the client side.
🛠️ How It Works Technically
1. Client-Side Image Compression (Canvas API)
Instead of piping user images to a backend server, we decode the image in the browser and draw it onto an off-screen HTML5 <canvas>. We then re-encode it using canvas.toBlob() or canvas.toDataURL() with configurable quality parameters across JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats.
- Advantage: Processing is near-instantaneous, there is zero network upload latency, and the user's images never touch our servers.
- Test it here: Image Compressor
2. Client-Side PDF Rebuilding
For our PDF Compressor, pages are rendered and rebuilt with image compression techniques directly within the user session. Documents with huge high-res embedded graphics can see substantial size reductions without requiring a backend round-trip.
3. Tech Stack
- Framework: Next.js (App Router) + TypeScript
- Styling: Tailwind CSS
-
Libraries:
pdf-lib, Canvas API - Deployment: Vercel Edge with static prerendering for instant sub-100ms global response times.
🔒 Why Privacy-First Matters in 2026
When handling resumes, bank statements, tax documents, or sensitive photos, user privacy shouldn't be an afterthought or a premium paid feature. By offloading processing to the browser:
- Hosting costs stay minimal (no heavy backend worker pools).
- User privacy is mathematically guaranteed because data doesn't leave the local device for simple utility jobs.
- The tools remain 100% free with no mandatory account creation or paywalls.

I'd love feedback from the DEV community:
- How does the client-side performance feel on your mobile vs desktop browsers?
- Are there specific file formats or tools you'd like to see added next?
