Getting started with Hacktoberfest
We are thrilled to be co-hosting Hacktoberfest 2020 in partnership with our friends at DigitalOcean!
If you’re new to our community, here’s the deal — DEV is the fastest-growing social network for developers. Programmers of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome here, and we have a Code of Conduct that we actually enforce. Best of all, DEV is built on Forem, the open source software that powers inclusive communities.
Be sure to check out the #hacktoberfest tag right here on DEV to see how people are participating, contributing, sharing info on their project, and supporting one another.
You can also use this template to post about your Hacktoberfest experience — we can’t wait to read it!
Brand-new Contributors: here are some guides and tips to help you get started:
- Open Source Resources For Beginners
- Overcoming Blockers and Contributing to Open Source
- How to Make your First Open Source Contribution
- Visit the Raise.dev Hacktoberfest Helpdesk where you'll meet open source maintainers that have volunteered to support contributors. The Helpdesk will be offering live coding sessions, paired programming, Q&A chats, and interviews with maintainers on their Twitch channel during Hacktoberfest. Some of the Forem/DEV team will be volunteering, too!
Project Maintainers: Share your project on DEV! Our community is the perfect place to get the word out about your project.
Use both the #hacktoberfest and #showdev tags on your post. Pro tip: the github repo liquid tag will make your post more beautiful! If you’d like some tips on making sure your repo is a friendly place for new contributors, take a look at this post.
You might also want to create an organization page for your project (see Angular as an example). For more information on how to get set up, check out the organization info page.
Happy Coding!
