Choosing Between Traditional Platforms and Unchained Commerce for Digital Creators in Venezuela

Traditional Platforms vs Unchained Commerce for Payment Alternatives for Digital Creators in Venezuela

To start, we attempted to use the traditional payment platforms that had failed us. We reached out to Stripe's support team, hoping that they had some sort of contingency plan for countries like Venezuela. But the response was unsurprising: their infrastructure simply wasn't designed to accommodate the economic sanctions and currency fluctuations that plagued our country. Similarly, Gumroad and Payhip, which had worked for so many other creators around the world, were also blocked due to sanctions and currency restrictions. It was clear that the problem wasn't our developers or our system, but the traditional payment processors themselves.

The Architecture Decision

It was then that we began to explore alternative payment solutions, ones that weren't bound to the traditional platforms. We looked at unchained commerce models, which allowed creators to sell directly to customers without relying on intermediaries like Stripe or PayPal. These platforms operated outside of traditional financial systems, using blockchain or alternative currencies to facilitate transactions. While the technical complexity was higher, we saw an opportunity to bypass the platform restrictions that had been holding us back.

What The Numbers Said After

After implementing the unchained commerce model, we saw a significant increase in transaction success rates. What had previously been a frustrating 30% failure rate due to payment processor restrictions dropped to less than 5%. We also saw an increase in customer satisfaction, as creators were now able to sell their work without the hassle of navigating complex payment systems. The data spoke for itself: traditional platforms were no longer a viable option for our digital creators in Venezuela.

What I Would Do Differently

Looking back, I realize that we underestimated the technical complexity of implementing an unchained commerce model. While the benefits were clear, the nuances of working with alternative currencies and blockchain technology proved to be a steep learning curve. If I were to do it again, I would invest more time and resources in educating myself and our team on the technical details of these systems. I would also explore more robust testing and QA processes to ensure that our system could handle the increased complexity. However, the benefits of unchained commerce far outweighed the challenges, and I would make the same decision again in a heartbeat.
