The Problem We Were Actually Solving
The primary issue we were facing was not just obtaining a traditional payment gateway account, but also dealing with the uncertainty of our platform's long-term availability due to potential future restrictions or takedown orders. Working with a third-party payment provider that didn't support our region would not only mean sacrificing our earnings but also leaving our users stranded without a means to pay for our digital product. We needed an alternative solution that was robust enough to support our existing and growing customer base with minimal interruptions.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
Initially, we considered using cryptocurrency payments as an alternative to traditional methods. It seemed like a straightforward solution – simply integrate a popular cryptocurrency payment processing service, such as BitPay or Stripe Checkout, and our problem would be resolved. However, upon further research and exploration, we realized that this path had its own set of downsides. Cryptocurrency payments come with substantial volatility in value, making it challenging to price our product consistently. Additionally, there are restrictions around accepting cryptocurrencies from customers based in certain countries, and there's also the problem of regulatory bodies taking a closer look at cryptocurrency transactions.
Furthermore, using cryptocurrency as a primary payment method would also introduce an extra layer of complexity when it came to refunds and customer support. It's not something we were comfortable with, especially considering we're offering a digital product with a relatively low price point.
The Architecture Decision
After weighing our options, we decided to go with a non-traditional payment method – offline payment methods, to be precise. Our decision was driven by the need for flexibility and control. We chose to implement Alipay and WeChat Pay, which allowed our users in restricted countries to purchase our digital products with ease. This approach not only reduced our operational burden but also gave us better flexibility in terms of pricing and transaction processing.
This choice, however, wasn't made without consulting our customers and stakeholders. We actively engaged with them to understand the nuances of the proposed solution and to gather feedback. This process ultimately led us to choose the payment methods we did.
What The Numbers Said After
The decision paid off in the short term, with a 20% increase in sales within the first three months of implementing offline payment methods. Our user base expanded beyond our initial expectations, and we witnessed a significant reduction in the number of failed transactions. However, these positive outcomes came with a trade-off. Our analytics showed a notable increase in manual administrative work, as we were now dealing with a higher volume of offline transactions. In essence, we had shifted our operational burden from complying with regulatory bodies to managing offline payments.
What I Would Do Differently
If I had to do it all over again, I would have placed more emphasis on implementing a multi-channel payment strategy from the outset. This would have allowed us to capture the benefits of both traditional payment methods and offline payment alternatives simultaneously. While it's true that going with offline payment methods allowed us to stay competitive in a restricted market, I believe diversifying our payment channels from the start would have provided us with more flexibility and a reduced administrative burden.
Reflecting on this experience, I've come to realize the complexity and nuances surrounding payment processing. The decision to use offline payment methods was made with the understanding that regulatory environments and market expectations are in a constant flux. While this approach worked for us in a restricted country, it may not be the best solution for every business.
