Why 'Good Enough' Product Photos Tank Your ROAS

Last month I pulled the numbers on an Etsy store running $800 a day in ads. Their main product photo was a decent phone shot on a wooden table with soft shadows. ROAS sat at 1.9x. Sales trickled in, but cost per acquisition kept climbing. The photo looked fine on a phone screen, yet it failed to stop the scroll on Instagram and Facebook.

I swapped in a version with the background stripped and replaced by clean white plus simple drop shadow. The edit took one click through the background remover for ecommerce. No new shoot, no Photoshop. Same product angle, just removed every distraction.

ROAS moved from 1.9x to 3.4x in nine days. Click-through rate rose 47 percent. The store cut daily spend to $550 while keeping the same order volume, saving roughly $2,200 that month. The only variable changed was the single image asset.

Good-enough photos still carry clutter that the algorithm and the buyer both notice. A clean frame keeps attention on the product for those extra two seconds that decide whether someone taps or scrolls. The difference shows up fast in the ad dashboard because the image is the first thing the platform and the customer evaluate.
