Why GTA 6 has no crossplay on day one
Crossplay is a multiplayer feature, and GTA 6 starts out as a story game. Rockstar describes the 19 November release as single-player, and Take-Two's CEO has said not to expect a multiplayer reveal soon. See {{link:does-gta-6-have-online|does GTA 6 have online?}} for the full status. {{st:reported}}
That also means you do not need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core to play the GTA 6 story, since those subscriptions are only required for online play. Our {{link:does-gta-6-require-ps-plus|does GTA 6 need PS Plus?}} page explains this.
Will GTA 6 Online have crossplay?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. Here is what history suggests {{st:estimate}}:
- GTA Online never added crossplay. Since 2013 it has kept PlayStation and Xbox players in separate lobbies, across three console generations.
- Red Dead Online had no crossplay either.
- The industry has moved. Fortnite, Call of Duty, Minecraft and many others now let PlayStation, Xbox and PC players meet. A new online mode built from scratch is the easiest time to add it.
- Cheating and PC. If a PC version arrives, Rockstar may keep console-only lobbies or make PC crossplay optional, as many games do.
Our read: crossplay between PS5 and Xbox in a future GTA 6 online mode is possible but should not be assumed. If it matters to you, buy for where your friends are today.
Friends on different consoles? How to choose
- Most of your friends on one system: pick that one. Without confirmed crossplay, the same console family is the only sure way to play online together later.
- Split or no preference: PlayStation is where most GTA 6 pre-orders are, according to one analysis, so more players overall.
- Cheapest way in: the Xbox Series S plays GTA 6, but at a lower resolution and with tight storage.
