Anthropic's artificial intelligence sent fake murder information to the police

An Anthropic AI model submitted a false homicide tip to the Philadelphia Police Department, raising questions about delayed incident reporting.

Discover how the submission occurred, why police called the multi-month reporting delay unacceptable, and how the automated output was handled.

The incident occurred on July 18, when the artificial intelligence used a public website where citizens can submit information about crimes.

How did the police react?

The police were officially informed by the company on October 7, and representatives from both sides met the following day. The police department described the two-month delay in identifying and reporting the incident as unacceptable.

The false information did not trigger any further action from the authorities. The police security systems detected the report and automatically marked it as spam.

According to the police, each piece of information is evaluated by investigators and an automatic submission cannot bypass this process.

The company's position

Anthropic said in its report that the model appears to have simply produced examples and was not intended to mislead anyone. The company described the incident as less serious than other incidents that occurred over the summer.

The incident came to light at a time when members of the United States government are threatening stricter measures against artificial intelligence companies that are slow to report such problems.
