Apple Upgrade: What you need to know about the new monthly payment plan

Apple has launched a new upgrade program in partnership with Klarna, covering iPhones, Apple Watches, MacBooks, and iPads.

This service replaces the legacy iPhone Upgrade Program.

Developers and users should note that the program excludes AppleCare+ and requires a separate Purchase Option Fee to acquire hardware at the end of the lease.

Automatic 6-month extensions trigger if the lease term is not addressed, and while late payments do not lock devices, they may be reported to credit agencies.

How the program works

With Apple Upgrade, the user pays a monthly fee for the use of the device. The payment term is set at 24 months for iPhone and Apple Watch, while for MacBook and iPad the term is 36 months. It is important to know that the program does not include the AppleCare+ service to cover damage or loss.

What happens at the end of the lease?

At the end of the period, the user must decide whether to return the device or purchase it by making a large lump sum payment. If the user does not make a decision, the program is automatically extended for 6 additional months. Although no interest is charged, late payments can affect the user's credit profile.

Device availability

The program concerns select models. For example, the iPhone Duo will be available on October 23, with pre-orders starting on October 16. Its price starts at $1.999, with monthly installments starting at $57,99 for 24 months.

However, there are several models that are not supported by the program, such as:

  • iPhone 16 and 16 Plus
  • Apple WatchSE
  • MacBook Neo
  • Mac mini
  • iPad (model with A16 processor)
  • studio display

The new program replaces Apple's older iPhone Upgrade Program.
