The UK CMA has proposed regulatory changes requiring Apple to open its iPhone contactless payment technology to rival providers.
Regulators argue current restrictions limit competition and innovation, whereas Apple contends that opening the platform could impact user privacy and security.
According to the statement, Apple's restrictions are making it difficult for local technology and payments companies. So far, no other company has managed to launch a similar digital wallet application in the country, unlike what is happening in the European Union.
What is the British authority asking for?
The authority wants access to international contactless payment standards and proposes that rules be established so that fees are significantly lower than today.
The public consultation will remain open until November 17, 2026, before a final decision is made.
