UK lawmakers are currently evaluating policy options to regulate the use and sale of smart glasses.
The discussion highlights the balance between the devices' assistive features for accessibility and their potential for non-consensual recording.
As public debate grows around privacy and security in wearable tech, developers and policy experts are increasingly addressing how to integrate ethical recording indicators and usage constraints into the ecosystem.
Civil Protection Minister Satvir Kaur said the benefits of glasses need to be weighed against the harm they can cause, noting that sectors such as health and education already have safety rules and professional policies in place to record them.
The discussion was opened by Liberal Democrat MP Anna Sabine. According to what she said, women have said that videos of them have gone viral online after men recorded them with smart glasses, without their knowledge or consent.
No specific ban has been announced by the British government. However, restrictions have already been imposed in other places: in Australia, the glasses are banned from public spaces such as swimming pools, gyms and government buildings, while the British pub chain Wetherspoons has banned their use on its premises.
