Calibre 9.17 is out with JPEG XL e-book conversion support, CSS Level 4 selectors, faster MOBI/AZW3/PDB compression, and fixes for PDF and EPUB 3 regressions.
The new version brings significant improvements in speed and editing capabilities. In particular, the program now supports JPEG XL images when converting books, while the conversion engine reads CSS Level 4 design rules for better processing of modern styles.
Faster operation and compression
Several improvements are related to the speed of operation. File compression for formats such as MOBI, AZW3 and PDB is now faster. At the same time, those who have libraries will notice faster startup and adding books, as long as they have the tag menu hidden.
In the area of accessibility, the built-in book viewer and content server now take into account the device setting to limit animations. Additionally, the checker tool in the book editor can detect problematic references and fix them automatically.

Bug fixes and new features
The new update also fixes issues that appeared in the previous version 9.16, such as failures when converting some PDF files and incorrect navigation when converting to EPUB 3. In addition, issues with unwanted blank pages in multi-column PDF layouts and issues with preserving list numbering when importing ODT files have been resolved.
In the library and information functions, information search sources from Google and Amazon have been restored using Camoufox, while issues with incorrect values and errors in book series management have been fixed. The content server has also received fixes so that books from the wrong library are not displayed and text searches in the current library are performed correctly.
Finally, the update brings improvements to reading in dark theme, better keyboard focus display, compatibility with Kobo and Tolino devices, as well as refreshed built-in news sources, including The Economist, Associated Press, The Washington Post, and Scientific American.
Version 9.17 is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS.
