Canonical's LXD 6.10.0 is now available as the first LTS release in the LXD 6 series.
It introduces centralized image source controls, restricted registry downloads, experimental storage block tracking, and asynchronous Ceph RBD mirroring.
The update integrates QEMU 10.2.1, LXC 7.0 LTS, and a new web UI, backed by standard support through June 2031.
Central image additions and management
The new release brings centralized control mechanisms for the sources from which system images are pulled. Administrators can now restrict downloads to only approved registries, enhancing security when provisioning new environments.
In the storage area, the ability to track changes to storage blocks for virtual machines has been added. This way, external backup tools can detect and transfer only the data that has been modified. Canonical is calling this feature experimental for now.
Networks, security and disaster recovery
For emergencies, the new version introduces asynchronous storage data replication for better disaster recovery. It also adds support for additional storage connectivity technologies from companies like Dell and Pure Storage.

On the security front, the update offers better oversight of user rights, reporting on digital credential expiration, and improved digital access token management. The previous automatic cluster recovery mechanism has also been removed.
New dashboard and updated tools
The web-based management environment has a new dashboard, allowing administrators to manage system instances, files, and identities directly from their screen.
Under the hood, the release incorporates updated software components, such as newer versions of virtualization and management tools, a revamped file system, as well as updated tools for using graphics cards in isolated environments, while removing older configuration options.
The new version comes with five years of standard support until June 2031, which can be extended until 2036 through additional support, while its availability is made gradually through the established information channels.
