OpenAI has updated its image generation capabilities with the rollout of the Images 2.6 model for ChatGPT and Codex.
The release adds support for GIF generation and introduces two configurable processing modes: Flare for high-speed, 6-second output, and Sunburst for quality.
With a 50% increase in generation speed, the update also supports reference image saving for prompt-based workflows and enhanced sketch-to-GIF controls.
The model is now available to all users.
Creating animations
Users can now create animated GIFs by simply describing what they want. In addition, there is the ability to convert sketches into animations, with the user having control over speed and frame rates.
Production speed and options
The image generation process is now 50% faster. Users can choose between two settings depending on their preferences:
- Flare: It focuses on speed, with a response time of just 6 seconds.
- Sunburst: It focuses on the highest quality and detail of the result.
At the same time, the ability to save reference images has been added. This way, the user can save faces or objects and call them by name in their instructions, without having to upload the image with each new attempt.
Availability
The update is available to all subscription tiers, via the mobile app, desktop, or website. OpenAI’s platforms produce an average of 4 billion images per week. Despite the upgrades, the company is facing legal challenges, with Ziff Davis filing a lawsuit against it in April 2025 over copyright issues.
