Cloudflare has announced plans to acquire Deno, the startup behind the Deno runtime.
Cloudflare engineer Kenton Varda says the deal will support improvements to Workers’ programming model and platform.
Deno recently introduced celld, an open-source implementation of Workers—a concrete point of connection between the two projects.
Deno was co-founded by Bert Belder and Ryan Dahl, who created Node.js. It recently introduced celld, an open source implementation of Workers. Varda said the Cloudflare team was excited about it.
Varda rejected the popular theory that Cloudflare designed Workers differently from other platforms to make it harder for customers to leave. He said the company believes that open software and the ability for users to choose another platform benefits the business.
Dahl said the Deno team is joining Cloudflare to help make Workers an established way to create programs that provide services to other computers.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Deno had raised a total of $26 million, including through a Series A funding round led by Sequoia.
