Development of new Ubuntu Core Desktop version for computers is accelerating

Canonical is accelerating development of Ubuntu Core Desktop, an immutable, snap-based OS variant.

A new team is targeting builds ahead of the 27.04 release for browser workflows, developer workstations, and gaming.

The idea was first presented in 2023 and was given in a test form. Now, according to a company executive, work is progressing more quickly. A new team has taken over this project exclusively, with new versions expected in view of the release of Ubuntu 27.04 next year. At the same time, it was emphasized that the classic, traditional version of the operating system is not going to disappear.

Where will the new version be used?

The development team focuses its attention on three key areas:

  • Web browser-based tasks
  • Systems for developers
  • Gaming computers

The challenges of the project

For the project to move forward, the entire desktop environment must be redesigned to work with easily replaceable components. Among these will be the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

However, there is a gap in the available applications, as several popular Linux programs are missing or do not offer full functionality in the official app store. At the same time, developers should consider alternative program installation systems, as well as the possibility of using virtual environments.

Long-term plans

According to the company, the long-term goal is for this new approach to become the default choice for applications and workloads everywhere: on personal computers, in large data centers, and on every other device. The company describes the future of this system as more secure, resilient, and reliable.
