Ubuntu is preparing a new version of computers that is updated in stages

Canonical has officially resumed development on Ubuntu Core Desktop, an immutable Snap-based Linux system.

A new team is targeting browser PCs, dev workstations, and gaming with modular, independently updated components.

Unlike traditional releases, in Ubuntu Core almost every part of the system—from the basic bootloader and kernel to the desktop and applications—works independently. These parts can be updated individually, without having to replace the entire operating system.

The three main objectives

The new working group focuses on three areas:

  • Computers used primarily for browsing the internet.
  • Workstations for programmers.
  • Gaming devices.

For developers, the company plans to rely on special isolated environments and collaboration with popular code tools. In the gaming sector, the goal is to create a system where graphics and related components will be updated independently, while also improving the Steam application.

The challenge of applications and the sequel

The biggest hurdle for the new system remains application compatibility, due to the very strict security rules imposed by the Snap architecture. The company is considering the use of special environments so that programs installed in other traditional ways can also run.
