Discovered Materials is offering $1 million in prizes for solutions to five materials science problems, including silicon interfaces, thermal management and density functional theory.
The company says its autonomous AI models made no significant progress on the problems in pre-announcement tests; its co-founder says the challenge is intended to measure AI progress in the field.
The five problems
The competition topics were defined in collaboration with an advisory group of academics from international universities and concern the following areas:
- Superconductivity: Ways to understand materials that acquire zero electrical resistance at low temperatures.
- Silicon interfaces: Prediction methods for the behavior of silicon compounds used in chips.
- Thermal management: Ways to better manage heat in materials.
- Photo-response of materials: Theories about how light affects the behavior of materials.
- Density functional theory: Improved computational methods for studying the structure of atoms and molecules.
Why is the competition being held?
Before announcing the competition on November 5, 2026, the company tested autonomous artificial intelligence models on the specific problems, but without significant results.
According to co-founder Advaith Sridhar, the goal of the initiative is to provide a benchmark for assessing the true progress of AI in materials science. The company seeks to determine whether current models can meet challenges that require a deep understanding of physics.
