Don't throw away your old graphics card: Smart ways to reuse it

Old graphics cards often retain high resale value and utility.

Discover how to repurpose older hardware like a GTX 1060 or RTX 3060 for home media servers, local AI workloads, video encoding, and secondary rendering tasks.

Where can you use an old card?

If you've upgraded your system, there are several ways to give new life to your old graphics card:

  • Selling on the second-hand market: Some older models, like the RTX 3060 series and GTX 1060, continue to appear frequently in used listings, and even older cards retain significant value that sometimes approaches their original cost.
  • Home media server: You can place it on a secondary computer at home to handle video encoding and decoding in programs like Jellyfin or Plex.
  • Entertainment system for TV: An older computer connected to the TV can be used for lighter indie games, old console emulation programs, or older titles.
  • Auxiliary tasks and processing: You can use it on computers running video editing programs like DaVinci Resolve or Blender, or even to run local artificial intelligence applications.

Using two cards on the same system

If you're thinking of putting your old card alongside your new one in your main computer, you can use it for ancillary tasks, such as recording video while gaming or improving the resolution in certain games. However, this option requires caution: you need to check if your power supply can handle the extra power, if your motherboard is compatible, and if there are any connection restrictions.

Storage and proper recycling

If you don't have any immediate plans to use it, you can keep the card as a backup in case of damage, making sure to store it safely in a special anti-static bag. In any case, if you decide to part with it permanently, avoid regular waste and send it to an electronic device recycling facility, so that valuable materials such as gold, copper and aluminum can be recovered.
