Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge: What are the differences between Google's two new health devices?

Fitbit's 2026 hardware release introduces two new health-tracking devices: the screen-free Fitbit Air ($99) and the Fitbit Edge ($179).

The Edge model features a 1.34-inch AMOLED touchscreen, physical input, and ECG capabilities.

Both devices utilize the Google Health Guardian suite and feature IP68/5ATM water resistance ratings.

Developers interested in fitness-centric mobile integration can leverage their data-sync capabilities across non-Android ecosystems.

The main differences

The most important difference is the way it is handled:

  • Fitbit Air: It does not have a screen. All settings and information are accessible exclusively through the app on your mobile phone.
  • Fitbit Edge: It features a 1,34-inch AMOLED touchscreen and a mechanical side button. It can display notifications, health data, and a simple version of Google Maps right on your wrist.

Sensors and capabilities

Both devices feature optical heart rate sensors and are IP68 certified, meaning they're dust and water resistant (up to 5ATM). The Fitbit Edge offers additional features, such as the ability to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an altimeter to measure the floors you climb.

Battery and charging

Both devices offer up to 7 days of battery life on a single charge. However, in the case of the Fitbit Edge, if you choose to keep the screen always on, the battery lasts about 2 days. The Edge supports fast charging: 15 minutes of plugging in is enough for a day of use, while a full charge takes 90 minutes.

Use and availability

Both devices support Google Health Guardian features for health monitoring and do not require the use of an Android phone to operate.

In terms of cost, the Fitbit Air was released at $99 and the Fitbit Edge at $179. Note that to fully utilize all the tracking features, a subscription to the Google Health Premium service is required.
