Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton has warned that humanity might have been better off never developing artificial intelligence, highlighting severe risks of societal division and corporate prioritization of profit over safety.
Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, known as one of the fathers of artificial intelligence, has expressed new concerns. He said he fears that technology could create a huge gap between rich and poor and endanger society, leading it to disintegration.
The attitude of technology leaders
Referring to the heads of large companies, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Sam Altman, Hinton argued that they know the risks but prefer the money. According to him, companies are rushing to evolve systems to stay ahead, ignoring the consequences.
Hinton likened a serious future crisis to the partial nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in 1979. In his assessment, it may take a similarly serious incident for companies to learn from their mistakes and take action.
There is still time for security.
Despite his fears, Hinton believes that humans are still in control and that there is still time to make a big effort to make the technology safe.
