Google is integrating on-device AI to bolster Android security against scams.
The upcoming 'Enhanced protection mode' for Google Messages utilizes the Private AI Compute environment for secure, local link analysis.
Devices equipped with Gemini Nano can perform this evaluation in real time.
Additionally, the platform is introducing specialized defenses against 2FA code interception.
These capabilities are being extended across various manufacturers, including Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, focusing on local data privacy.
Enhanced message protection
Google is introducing an optional enhanced protection feature to the Messages app. When the user turns it on, data is analyzed in a special Google environment called Private AI Compute, which keeps the data isolated and secure.
On more modern devices, like newer Pixel and Galaxy models, AI will be able to check suspicious links as you receive them. Additionally, the system will display warnings when you receive links from numbers you don't have saved in your contacts.
Eavesdropping protection and hidden screen sharing
Google's fraud detection feature is now expanding to devices from other manufacturers, including Motorola, OnePlus, Honor, Oppo, and Xiaomi.

In December, Google will add additional security against a specific scam method where scammers try to steal one-time-use codes (2FA) by convincing the victim to enable call forwarding on their phone. The system will warn users not to fall victim to such manipulations.
According to a study sponsored by Google, Android users are less likely to fall victim to fraud compared to iPhone users.
