Google has updated the Play Store to let users in select markets publish AI-generated Android apps directly from Google AI Studio without a paid developer account.
Apps built via Gemini text prompts are initially restricted to the creator's personal devices, with future support for secure sharing and eventual standard store reviews.
Building and testing applications with artificial intelligence
Adult users in the United States and select markets will be able to upload apps they build through Google AI Studio without needing a paid developer account. The tool allows developers to create apps by simply writing instructions to Gemini and editing the code directly.
Initially, these apps will be available only on their creators' personal devices in a special section. Gradually, Google plans to allow them to be shared securely with friends and family. When creators want, they will be able to upgrade their account to a business account to submit their apps to the store's regular security checks for the general public.
New search and gaming features
The app store is also getting changes to how you find content:
- Links from Gemini: The digital assistant will now display app links directly within conversations.
- Sports content: The sports pages are expanding to cover football matches from the Premier League, Major League Soccer and other leagues.
- New look: The store layout is being revamped for cars with built-in Google services and Android XR devices.
- Finding games: A new feature suggests games based on a personal preference profile that users can customize.
- Game lists: Users can recommend game collections to others.
- Video recording: The Sidekick feature gains the ability to record 30-second clips of gameplay.
Tools for game creators
Developers are getting new ways to engage with their audience. These include 48-hour challenges that match players of similar experience to achieve high scores, as well as the ability to offer rewards alongside store points. Additionally, a Q&A section is being added to app pages where players can ask and answer questions.
