Google links Search to artificial intelligence in schools and causes backlash

Google plans to bring AI Guided Learning to Google Classroom and let school administrators control student access to Gemini products and Search.

The announcement also covers changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews for school accounts, intended to avoid simply serving ready-made homework answers.

The report discusses the controls and the possibility that schools blocking AI may not have access to Google Search.

The company plans to add AI Guided Learning to Google Classroom. At the same time, school administrators will be able to choose whether students have access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search.

Google will also change the appearance of AI Mode and AI Overviews on school accounts so that they don't just show ready-made answers for school assignments. The company says the goal is for school leaders to decide how AI tools are used in the classroom.

Google’s vice president of education, Chris Phillips, said that Search and AI are deeply connected. Google had previously announced this direction at Google I/O in June, with the message “Google Search is now AI Search.” So schools that completely block AI may not be able to use Google Search. This is not a block that has already been implemented.

The debate has sparked backlash. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has banned the use of artificial intelligence in some schools and accused Google of using its monopoly power to force the technology into public schools.

Former Federal Trade Commission chairwoman Lina Khan said it was dangerous for a company with a monopoly to control an essential service. Senator Bernie Sanders called the decision to remove access to Google Search from schools that refuse to use artificial intelligence “blackmail.” The block has not been implemented and is being mentioned as a possibility.
