A hardware repair specialist uncovered an elaborate counterfeit GPU scam featuring a fake graphics processor die and memory chips.
Acquired as a bare PCB without a cooling system, the card made pre-purchase verification impossible while demonstrating surprising manufacturing effort.
How the fraud was set up
A customer paid about $350, or 30.000 rubles, to buy a card with the intention of repairing it. However, when he gave the card to the repair specialist VIK-off, the fraud was exposed.
Key internal components and memory chips were replaced with fake ones, which were manufactured to look strikingly like the originals. A team of experts notes that this particular scam stands out for the enormous effort the perpetrators put into making the fake components look real.
The market without a cooling system
The card was purchased bare, without its original cooling system. This lack made it difficult to check whether the card was working properly before purchase.
