The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is driving a massive surge in US energy demand, straining aging electrical grids and raising concerns over short-term bill spikes and system reliability.
Industry leaders are looking toward grid modernization and new efficiency solutions to meet the challenge.
There are concerns that the energy crisis could lead to higher electricity bills in the short term, as well as outages or technical problems in the long term. However, industry executives speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference appeared optimistic that the pressure could lead to grid modernization.
New solutions for the network
Market executives commented on the developments, including Apoorv Bhargava, founder and CEO of Weavegrid, Tim Heidel, CEO of Veir, and Kristen Eberhard, vice president of policy at the organization Rewiring America.
Weavegrid offers energy management software that helps utilities make the most of existing systems and reduce bills. Veir, for its part, builds physical infrastructure, specifically power transmission lines that carry electricity more efficiently.
