E Ink has announced the Kaleido 4 display technology, featuring an oxide backplane to achieve improved response times and 18 fps video playback.
The display is capable of rendering over 40,000 colors while refining contrast and white reflectivity through a color filter applied over a monochrome e-paper substrate.
The technology is debuting in the Hanvon M10 C II tablet, currently available in the Chinese market.
Speed and colors
Digital paper displays have had the disadvantage of experiencing delays in image refresh rates. Kaleido 4 promises to significantly improve this area, allowing video to be displayed at 18 frames per second. Although this number is small compared to mobile phone screens, it is a significant development for this technology.
Additionally, the new display can produce over 40.000 colors. E Ink also reports improvements in white reflectivity and contrast, aiming to make text appear clearer.
How it works
Kaleido technology applies a color filter over traditional black-and-white digital paper. To achieve the fastest response, Kaleido 4 uses an additional oxide element on the back of the display.

Availability
The first device to use Kaleido 4 technology is the M10 C II tablet from Hanvon Technology. For now, the device is only available in the Chinese market. Although E Ink supplies displays to well-known companies such as Amazon, Kobo and Boox, it has not yet been announced when we will see the new technology in devices released worldwide.
