Tesla's new Roadster, showcased in Texas, integrates SpaceX cold-gas thrusters for controlled maneuvers and a suction-based adhesion system for unconventional surface contact.
With production scheduled for 2028, the vehicle's flight system represents a unique hardware-engineering application.
For developers, it provides a look at how specialized aerospace control systems are being adapted for consumer-grade performance vehicles.
The new vehicle capabilities
The vehicle stands out for its unusual way of moving. It has a special suction system on the bottom, which allows the car to “stick” to surfaces, even when moving upside down. In addition, the Roadster is equipped with cold gas thrusters, based on SpaceX technology. These thrusters allow the vehicle to perform controlled jumps and landings.
Availability and prices
Production of the new Roadster is expected to begin in 2028. Those wishing to pre-order will have to pay an initial deposit of $5.000. Then, a payment of $45.000 is required for the base version of the car within 10 days.
For buyers who want the package with the suction system and thrusters, there is an additional cost of $245.000. The company clarifies that the full version of the flight system is available by invitation only.
