Linux kernel 7.3 arrives with 18,765 commits from 3,021 developers, introducing FailFS, sched_ext BPF updates, the new fchroot() system call, and broad hardware support expansions.
New features and system changes
The new version brings changes to the way processing time is shared across large systems. In the area of file management, FailFS is added, a small file system that intentionally causes file operations to fail. At the same time, Btrfs stops using the older free space cache, while NTFS3 gains initial support for alternative Windows data streams.
In networking and storage, the built-in SMB server adds support for Apple Time Machine backups, per-share encryption, and encrypted SMB Direct connections. FUSE also gains improvements to direct data transfer.
Memory, hardware and security
Memory and virtual machine management adds active space monitoring for virtual systems. Hardware support is expanded for AMD Zen 6 processors, AMD and Intel graphics cards, Realtek wireless, portable gaming devices, and ARM and RISC-V systems.
