LumineCapture: A New, Free Tool for Quick Screenshots on Linux

LumineCapture, a new open-source screenshot utility for Linux, is built in Rust to maximize performance and minimize system overhead.

By avoiding background daemons—except when utilizing GPU-accelerated OCR—it offers a more resource-efficient alternative to existing tools.

Features include native image editing, annotation, and OCR using PaddleOCR models.

It currently supports KDE Plasma, COSMIC, and Niri environments, with packages available for major distributions including Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, and Arch.

Speed without waiting

One of its main features is that it doesn't need to be constantly "running" in the background to be ready. The only exception is if you choose to use the text recognition function that utilizes your graphics card. According to its creator, the program is about 4 times faster in saving files compared to similar tools like Spectacle and Flameshot.

Functions for your daily work

Despite the emphasis on speed, LumineCapture offers several editing tools:

  • Image editing: You can add arrows, text, and various shapes to the snapshots.
  • Text recognition: It has a built-in function (OCR) that allows text extraction from the images you take, using PaddleOCR models.
  • Pinning: You can keep a screenshot "pinned" to your screen so you can view it while you continue your work in other windows.

Compatibility and availability

LumineCapture supports the KDE Plasma, COSMIC, and Niri desktop environments. There is currently no support for GNOME.

The program is currently at version 0.2 and ready-made packages are provided for the following distributions:

  • Fedora (version 43 and later)
  • Ubuntu (24.04 LTS and later)
  • Debian 13 and later
  • Arch Linux
