Joe Osborne’s review examines the 16-inch MacBook Pro’s PROLED XDR display, including its 3,472 × 2,266 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.
It also reports on performance and battery tests, and distinguishes Apple’s stated peak brightness from measurements the reviewer did not make.
The base model costs $3.399 and includes the M5 Pro, 24GB of memory, and 1TB of storage. The model we tested cost $7.399 and didn't have the optional nano-texture coating. A configuration with the most expensive options goes up to $14.549.
The screen and the use of touch
PROLED XDR is Apple's display technology. It uses two layers of light-emitting diodes to create the image, without a separate backlight. The display is 16,3 inches diagonally and can refresh the image up to 120 times per second. The editor positively evaluated its contrast and colors compared to several competitors.
The touchscreen can be useful for some professional tasks, but prolonged use can be tiring on the hand. The optional nano-texture coating costs $150 and reduces reflections. According to the author, it also helps make fingerprints less visible.
Lighter and faster
The new model is about 1,6 centimeters thick and weighs about 1,8 kilograms. Its predecessor was about 1,7 centimeters thick and weighed about 2,1 kilograms. The version with M5 Max weighs about 1,9 kilograms. Despite the weight reduction, the connectors remain the same.

In most performance tests, the new MacBook Pro outperformed the previous 16-inch model with the M5 Max. However, in almost all graphics tests, Asus and Lenovo laptops with discrete graphics cards outperformed the M5 Max's graphics card.
When performing demanding tasks for a long time, the fans can become annoyingly loud. Once the task is finished, the cooling system quickly reduces the temperature.
The battery test was done with stored video, not online video. In this test, the battery lasted longer than Apple's promised 24 hours of online video playback. The MacBook Pro also outperformed the comparison systems by 10 to nearly 17 hours.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display starts at $2.899.
