Microsoft reported $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI for the quarter ended September 30, accounting for nearly 11% of its $92.3 billion total quarterly revenue.

Financial reports also highlight $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI as agreements continue through 2030.

Microsoft's fiscal year begins in July, making the quarter ending September 30, 2026, the first period of fiscal year 2027. For the full year of 2026, OpenAI revenue had reached $24,1 billion, while based on the pace of the last quarter, Microsoft could collect about $40 billion annually.

Outstanding debts and revenue percentages

At the end of September, Microsoft had $7,2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI, up from $6 billion at the end of June. The money represents OpenAI’s debts for previous transactions, not additional revenue.

OpenAI reportedly shares 20% of its revenue with Microsoft under a previous deal for an investment of more than $13 billion, although neither company has publicly confirmed that percentage. Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI continues to share revenue through 2030, subject to certain limits.

Loosening ties and reducing share

The two companies began to loosen their ties in October 2025, when Microsoft relinquished its sole control over OpenAI, while as part of the deal, OpenAI committed to purchasing an additional $250 billion worth of hosting services.

Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI fell slightly from about 25% in June to 24% in September. This is a gradual decline from the 27% it had been at after the October 2025 reorganization, without Microsoft explaining the reason for this decline.
