New GNOME add-on brings application menus to the top panel

A new orbit-global-menu extension for GNOME Shell provides built-in menus for 292 applications using documented keyboard shortcuts, supporting GNOME versions 48 through 51.

The new addition, called orbit-global-menu, overcomes previous hurdles associated with graphics technologies, changes in the way programs communicate, and lack of support from modern Linux applications. For two hundred and ninety-two popular applications, the tool automatically creates menus using their keyboard shortcuts.

Additional settings for full menus

For programs like GIMP and Shotwell, there is the option to install a companion tool that helps display their full menus. This tool requires users to build it from its source files by following specific installation commands. Some applications, like Firefox, require a little tweaking to display their menus properly.

If an open application is not supported, the top panel displays simple actions for windows and the workspace. The appearance includes opaque menu backgrounds and hides the small workspace indicators in the top panel.
