Now Playing Card is a GNOME Shell extension that consolidates track info and playback controls for up to 10 concurrent audio sources and browser tabs into the panel or Quick Settings menu.

It keeps paused players accessible, supports custom album art, interactive seeking, and an ignore list for filtering unwanted streams.

Compatible with GNOME 45 through 51.

Typically, media management systems only show what's currently playing, making switching between different sources less convenient. With this extension, if you pause a podcast or song to watch a video, the previous app doesn't disappear but remains available to resume playback whenever you want.

How multi-app control works

The app organizes information into separate cards for each program, which include album art, an icon, and an interactive progress bar. It can accommodate up to ten players at once, while offering basic controls like repeat and shuffle where available.

To prevent multiple open applications from taking up too much space in paused mode, a special effect is used so that only the active card is expanded. In addition, there is the option to display the title and artist directly in the system's top panel, accompanied by optional animations, or even disable animations.

Settings and compatibility

The settings allow you to create an exclusion list to automatically ignore sources that play audio without your consent, such as videos that start automatically in the browser. The extension also hides the core GNOME media engine when active.

The extension is compatible with GNOME versions from 45 to 51, covering distributions such as Ubuntu from version 24.04 LTS to 26.10, and is available through the official extensions website.
