Startup Everbloom developed renoa, an alternative clothing fiber manufactured from protein waste and a biodegradable biopolymer using an AI materials science model.

The US FTC recently approved it as the first new fiber classification in 25 years.

The material, called renoa, is made from protein waste. Specifically, the company collects waste wool and cashmere, as well as feather and down fluff from the bedding industry. These materials are ground into a powder and mixed with a biodegradable material to create fibers.

The US Federal Trade Commission has officially recognized the material, making it the first new fiber category in 25 years.

The startup took three years to develop the new material, using, among other things, a special artificial intelligence system for materials science. The company made test items, such as sweaters, gloves and scarves. One of these scarves had been through repeated washings and drying without showing any wear, pilling or shrinkage.

The company is already working with several companies to bring the material to market. The first products are expected to be released in the second quarter of 2027 and will likely contain a blend where renoa makes up about 20% of the material combined with cashmere.
