The US government has restricted new sales and licensing for foreign-made robotic vacuums and lawnmowers equipped with environmental sensors, wireless connectivity, and local software.
The rule affects units weighing over 4.4 pounds, impacting manufacturers like Dreame, Dyson, Ecovacs, and Roborock.
Existing consumer devices and retail stock remain unaffected.
Which robots are affected?
The new regulation concerns robotic vacuum cleaners and robotic lawnmowers. The ban applies to robots that have sensors for the environment, can connect wirelessly and run local software, as long as they weigh more than two kilograms including their base.
The brands affected include well-known companies such as Dreame, Dyson, Ecovacs and Roborock. The same category includes iRobot, which is owned by Picea from China, as well as Shark, which manufactures its products in China and Southeast Asia.
What it means for stores and homes
Devices that have already been approved or are in stock in stores are not immediately affected and can be sold as normal. Meanwhile, robots already in consumers' homes will continue to operate without any problems.
